A - Z Projects

Outline planning permission was recently granted for the construction of up to 535 dwellings on land between Daventry Road and Welsh Road East, Southam. Orion Heritage provided heritage planning advice to Hallam Land Management throughout the promotion and planning application process for the proposed development.

Orion Heritage undertook a heritage desk-based assessment of the site at an early stage of the promotion of the site. This concluded that the site had potential for prehistoric and Roman remains of local significance. It concluded that there were no issues with the setting of nearby designated heritage assets. A subsequent geophysical survey of the site revealed the remains of a Roman settlement within part of the site. Following submission of the planning application, archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken which confirmed the presence of a small Roman settlement and also revealed a Roman human burial. A large ammonite fossil was revealed in the underlying limestone rock underneath a ditch of the Roman settlement.

Planning permission was granted with a condition requiring a programme of archaeological mitigation excavation. Orion Heritage negotiated and agreed the scope of the mitigation works with the LPA ahead of the site being put on the market.
