Millstone Park, Burwell

Managing a major archaeological discovery within a strategic housing development

The challenge

Orion Heritage provided archaeological management and heritage consultancy services for Millstone Park, Burwell, a major mixed-use development in Cambridgeshire comprising 350 homes, a sports hub and a countryside park for This Land™.

The site was already known to contain Bronze Age archaeological remains following earlier evaluation works undertaken prior to Orion Heritage’s involvement. Planning permission had been granted with conditions requiring a programme of archaeological mitigation excavation ahead of construction.

Orion Heritage was appointed to develop, coordinate and manage the archaeological strategy for the site, working closely with Cambridgeshire County Council, Oxford Archaeology East and the wider project team to deliver a proportionate and carefully managed programme of investigation.

What followed proved to be one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of its kind in the region.

Excavations revealed evidence of over 4,000 years of activity, including an early Neolithic funerary monument dating to around 3700 BC and one of the largest and best-preserved Late Bronze Age settlements identified in East Anglia. Archaeologists uncovered roundhouses, workshops, storage pits, burials and extensive artefact assemblages providing rare insight into prehistoric farming, craftworking and ritual activity.

The discoveries are considered regionally important and will contribute significantly to ongoing research into prehistoric settlement and landscape use in Cambridgeshire and the wider East of England.

Our approach

Alongside managing the excavation programme itself, Orion Heritage helped ensure that archaeological work progressed efficiently alongside the wider development programme, balancing rigorous investigation with the practical requirements of a major housing scheme.

The project also included a strong public engagement and interpretation element. Orion Heritage worked with This Land™ and Oxford Archaeology East to deliver community open days, stakeholder visits and, more recently, the design of a permanent on-site interpretation panel sharing the story of the discoveries with future residents and visitors.

Orion Heritage has also designed a permanent on-site interpretation panel sharing the story of the discoveries with future residents and visitors. The panel combines archaeological findings, reconstructions and accessible storytelling to help bring Burwell’s prehistoric landscape to life for the local community. The installation is now progressing towards manufacture and installation on site.
